Tottenham should hijack West Ham’s move for Manchester United defender Harry Maguire.

That is the opinion of former United and Spurs striker Teddy Sheringham, who believes Maguire would be an ‘excellent’ addition to Ange Postecoglou’s squad in north London.

Maguire has been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford after slipping down Erik ten Hag’s pecking order and being stripped of the captaincy.

Ten Hag has publicly described Maguire as an ‘important’ member of his squad but United are believed to be open to selling the 30-year-old should they receive a suitable offer.

According to Sky Sports, West Ham have held initial talks with their Premier League rivals to discuss a summer deal for Maguire, who completed an £80m move to Old Trafford in 2019.

Hammers boss David Moyes is keen to bring Maguire and his United team-mate Scott McTominay to east London, though the clubs are believed to be a way apart in terms of numbers.

Sheringham has urged Tottenham to enter the race for Maguire and says the England defender can thrive once he ends his faltering Manchester United career.

‘Harry Maguire would be an excellent option for Tottenham,’ the former England striker told Lord Ping.

‘Whenever you watch Maguire play for England, he rarely lets anyone down. He is a solid, proven professional that is well suited for the Premier League.

‘He has had a tough time at Manchester United – he took a lot of flak and was always the fall guy.

‘I actually think that those experiences at United will hold him in good stead and could push him onto to have to a brilliant end to his career. He will have plenty to prove and I think he would be a great signing for Tottenham.

‘I really think he has been hung out to dry at Manchester United. If I think back to any of the centre backs that I played with, I’m not sure they would have been able to cope with amount that Harry Maguire has over the last few years.’

Sheringham, who won three Premier League titles at United and scored 124 goals across two spells at Spurs, added: ‘If I was in Harry Maguire’s position, I would have been looking to leave last summer.

‘A centre half is the cornerstone of any team so trying to reclaim your place as the starting centre half is a different challenge.

‘There were times last season where Maguire wasn’t even United’s third choice centre half. If that was me, then I would have left. I would want to be playing week-in, week-out at this stage of my career.

‘Whoever Maguire decides to join, if he does move on, which I think he should, they will be getting a great player. I’m surprised that nobody has come in for him yet, that no one has snapped him up.

‘Maguire has taken a lot of stick from a lot of people over the years, but at United, I feel he hasn’t been used in the right way and has been exposed by some of the players around him.

‘I think he’s been hung out to dry at the club in many ways. A fresh start will be the best option for the player, and, as I said, whoever gets him will be signing a top player.’
