Tottenham have registered their interest in Arsenal transfer target Houssem Aouar, according to reports in France.

The Gunners appear to be in the market for a midfielder, with Granit Xhaka looking likely to link up with Jose Mourinho at Roma.

Aouar has been on their radar for some time, but Arsenal failed to meet Lyon’s €60million (£55.5m) price tag for their midfielder last summer.

He has been linked with a switch to the Emirates again in the current transfer window, with the French club said to have drastically lowered their valuation to around £25m.

Le10 Sport claim Arsenal have made an opening offer for Aouar, but there are multiple teams vying for his signature including Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-German.

And the report states that the Gunners’ north London rivals Tottenham have now joined the race for the France international, with the amount demanded by Lyon ‘not a problem’ for Spurs.

Lyon boss Peter Bosz is said to want to keep Aouar, however, the club may look to cash in amid the ongoing financial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Arsenal finished eighth last season in the Premier League as they missed out on European football for the first time in 25 years.

And ex-Gunners midfielder Emmanuel Petit has exclusively told Metro.co.uk that he wants his former club to bring in a minimum of five players with ‘quality and personality’ this summer.

‘If Arsenal want to be competitive again, they need at least five players with both talent and character,’ he said.

‘The first thing they need is a proper goalscorer. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was a proper goalscorer but he had a terrible time this season. They need wingers too.

‘Arsenal always used to have very good wingers, who could go one-on-one out wide, who could bring speed to the attack, but there are so many positions at Arsenal where they need top players.

‘I still believe they have very interesting young players but they need players around them to show them the way because it shouldn’t be their responsibility to take care of the team.’
