Why Did the Titanic Sink? | HISTORY
April 15, 1912, was a day the world cannot forget due to the large-scale tragedy that occurred on that day. It was the day the RMS Titanic, carrying 2,200 passengers and crew, sank into the North Atlantic Ocean after striking an iceberg.
The ship departed Southampton on April 10 en route to New York City. The Titanic was renowned for its size and luxury and was designed by Irish shipbuilder William Pirrie. Despite being deemed ‘unsinkable’ due to its watertight compartments, the Titanic failed when the world least expected it- during its first voyage that later became its last.
After stops in Cherbourg, France, and Queenstown, Ireland, the Titanic headed for New York City. However, just before midnight on April 14, it collided with an iceberg, rupturing multiple compartments. The ship’s bow sank first, followed by the stern, which broke in half before sinking to the ocean floor. The disaster claimed over 1,500 lives, with most survivors being women and children. Notable victims included British journalist William Thomas Stead and heirs to prominent fortunes.
The Cunard liner Carpathia- known for rescuing victims during ship emergencies- arrived 80 minutes after the Titanic sank, rescuing survivors from lifeboats and the icy waters. Meanwhile, the Leyland liner Californian, which was a bit closer, failed to hear the Titanic’s distress signal because its radio operator was off duty.
Several years later, on September 1, 1985, a joint U.S.-French expedition located the wreck of the Titanic on the ocean floor, approximately 13,000 feet deep. To date, the sinking of Titanic remains one of the major tragedies that shook the whole world as it led to the death of over 1,500 people amid global outcry.
