The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Tuesday, emphasised the need to address the high rate of cervical cancer in Nigeria. ⁣

Tinubu made the call at the National launch of the HPV Vaccine into the country’s routine immunisation schedule in Abuja. ⁣

Special Adviser to the First Lady on Media, Busola Kukoyi, disclosed this in a statement she signed on Tuesday titled ⁣‘First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu decries high prevalence of cervical cancer in Nigeria.’ ⁣

Advocating cancer preventive measures amongst girls, she remarked, “For me, I will recommend that girls who are under 18 years of age and sexually active avail themselves of the opportunity of this vaccine to avoid a future of ill health and possibly death.” ⁣

She highlighted the significance of the vaccine, saying, “The introduction of the HPV vaccine into our routine immunization schedule is a pivotal step towards ensuring a cervical cancer-free generation.” ⁣

The First Lady also stressed the importance of education and awareness about the HPV virus, urging for regular screenings and improved access to healthcare with targeted behavioral interventions.⁣

She recommended the vaccine for girls under 18 years of age, who are sexually active, emphasising the vaccine’s role in preventing future health complications and potential fatalities. ⁣

The former lawmaker also pointed out that the initiative reflects the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to gender equality and empowering women to prioritize their health.⁣

Backing her sentiments, the Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Mohammed Pate, vouched for the vaccine’s safety and efficacy, noting its successful use in numerous countries globally.⁣

He remarked, “No father or mother who really understands they can prevent a serious disease will stop their daughters from taking the vaccine, except they really do not understand.”⁣

Other dignitaries, including the Sultan of Sokoto, along with partners from the health sector, expressed their support, acknowledging the vaccine’s potential to revolutionise women’s health in Nigeria.⁣

Concluding the event, The First Lady oversaw the administration of the HPV vaccine to young girls in attendance, symbolising the nation’s commitment to a healthier future for women.⁣
