The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, SAN, has reiterated the Tinubu administration’s commitment to the rule of law and the well-being of Nigerians.
He emphasised that there will be no reversal of this policy, given President Tinubu’s strong belief that democracy can only flourish in a society where the rule of law reigns supreme.
Fagbemi made this statement on Thursday in Abuja during a citizen engagement event on Justice Sector Reforms organised by the Federal Ministry of Justice.
“As we continue on this reform journey, let me reaffirm our commitment to upholding the rule of law, ensuring equitable access to justice, and building a justice system that is fair, transparent, and responsive to the needs of all citizens.
“Together, we will foster a justice sector that inspires confidence and delivers on its mandate to serve the people,” he said.
According to the minister, the justice sector has recently achieved remarkable progress due to the dedication and hard work of the ministry’s departments, units, partners, and stakeholders.
He highlighted some of the Ministry’s achievements, including the development and adoption of the National Policy on Justice (2024–2028), the National Policy on Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution 2024, and the implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA, 2015).
Other accomplishments include review and validation of restorative justice documents for the FCT, signing and unveiling of Plea Bargaining Guidelines for Federal Prosecutors, introduction of non-custodial sentencing initiatives, and facilitation of speedy dispensation of justice.
“The Ministry has built and furnished courts within Kirikiri Prison in Lagos State and installed a virtual court system to fast-track trials and decongest custodial centres. I will be handing over the keys to two of the courtrooms to the Honourable Chief Judge of the Federal High Court and one courtroom to the Chief Judge of the Lagos State High Court,” he added.
