Tim Sherwood has slammed Mikel Arteta for failing to to be more flexible during Arsenal’s 0-0 Premier League draw at Brighton on Saturday.

The Gunners went into the game on the back of a three-game winning run in the league, including an emphatic 3-1 win over north London rivals Tottenham.

But Arteta’s side struggled to deal with Brighton’s high-pressing style of play and were lucky to come away from the Amex Stadium with a point.

Former Spurs manager Sherwood believes that Arsenal have no Plan B if their usual tactics of playing out from the back don’t bear fruit.

‘Arsenal have no clue when to go long. They need to be more flexible in how they play,’ he told Premier League Productions.

‘They are hell-bent on playing out from the back – where as they [Brighton] mix it up. They know when to play through and they know when to go long.

Arsenal did manage to hold on for a point.

‘It looked like that was after the Lord Mayor’s Show [for Arsenal]. That was the big game [Tottenham]. Now, we are back to the boring business and it looked boring.’

Speaking after the game on the south coast, Arteta admitted that his team were below par and suggested that they were fortunate to come away from the game with a point.

‘I think it’s a point gained. I don’t think we deserved anything more than that,’ the Spaniard said.

‘We did deserve the points because we defended really well the last 15-20 metres of the pitch. But in the end we never felt in control of the game and we struggled to break their press and get a good sequence of passes and impose ourselves in the final third and they made it really tough for us.’

Arsenal currently sit in 11th place in the Premier League table and welcome Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace to the Emirates in their first match after the international break on October 18.
