Former Ghana striker, Asamoah Gyan, has hit out at his former team-mates for not supporting him after he missed a penalty at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The Black Stars were awarded the spot-kick in the final moments of extra time in a quarter-final clash against Uruguay.
Luis Suarez had handled a goal-bound header from Dominic Adiyiah and handed the West Africans the chance to make history.
However, Gyan’s strike came off the crossbar, and the match went to a penalty shootout, where Ghana was eventually defeated.
Asamoah Gyan, who is his country’s all-time top scorer, addressed the backlash he received after the incident during an Instagram Live session.
He said: “When the penalty miss happened, I was abused and called names because some people said I should have left it for someone else.
“Why didn’t they step up to take it? They were afraid. Cowards. I will say it—they are cowards.
“The fans can say what they want, but sometimes we need to educate them. Yet, nobody spoke up for me.”
