The Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Nentawe Yilwatda, has called for sustainable, peace-driven solutions to Nigeria’s humanitarian issues, emphasizing the unifying power of diversity.

He spoke at a Symposium on Human Rights with the theme “Unity in Diversity: Embracing Freedom, Equity, and Dignity for All,” held in Abuja on Wednesday.

The Minister highlighted the importance of inter-ethnic and religious harmony in addressing national challenges while narrating an incident where he had saved over 500 persons

Reflecting on the personal experiences which, according to him, happened during crises in Bauchi, Plateau, and other regions, the Minister shared his role in safeguarding over 500 women and children during violent clashes.

“Even as we lost everything, our priority was saving lives. That experience shaped my belief in unity and resilience,” he said, underscoring the need for peace as a long-term economic solution.

He reiterated President Tinubu’s directive to “give a human face to reforms” and expressed his commitment to alleviating suffering while fostering hope.

The International Human Rights Commission, IHRC’s head of Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria, Mr. Hezekiah Duru, also stressed the importance of unity and dignity, insisting that without these, the nation will hardly prosper.

“This gathering represents a second opportunity for us to deepen our understanding and cooperation and explore new attributes of cooperation between human rights as essential to the full development of individuals and communities,” he said.

“As we gather here today, we are reminded that Nigeria is a multicultural and more ethnic country with over 250 ethnic groups, with 500 languages spoken and understanding where we are and what we have, and all that the Lord of the universe has given to Nigeria.

“So why are we really suffering? That’s the question. The truth is that there’s no freedom, no equity,” he added.
