Jonathan Pryce has been spotted in character as Prince Philip during filming for The Crown.
The 74-year-old actor is taking on the role of the Duke of Edinburgh for the fifth season of the show, and cameras have started rolling for the first time since the late royal’s death in April.
In pictures taken this week, Jonathan was seen in the driving seat of a Range Rover MK1 as he shot scenes for the hit Netflix drama.
He was in character on the Hertfordshire set, and he was seen wearing a mustard tie and navy suit for the scenes.
The upcoming series will focus on the House of Windsor during the early 1990s, and the Welsh actor – who will play Philip for two series – previously admitted he was ‘confident’ about taking on such a ‘daunting’ role.
He said: ‘I am delighted to be working with Netflix again.
‘The positive experience I had making The Two Popes has given me the confidence to tackle the daunting prospect of portraying Prince Philip.
‘To be doing so with Peter Morgan in the company of Imelda [Staunton] and Lesley [Manville] will be a joy.’
He’s part of a fresh cast coming in for the next season, with 2022 seeing Imelda Staunton replace Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II.
Meanwhile, Helena Bonham Carter has stepped away as Princess Margaret with Lesley Manville coming into the role, while Elizabeth Debicki takes over from Emma Corrin as Princess Diana.
Another change sees Dominic West coming in as Princes Charles, who was most recently played by Josh O’Connor.
A lot of the new series will focus on the breakdown of Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage.
The drama could also focus on the separation of Prince Andrew from Sarah Ferguson and Princess Anne’s divorce from Mark Phillips, which all took place in 1992.
Over the weekend, new pictures confirmed the series will recreate the famous fire that tore through Windsor Castle in 1992 as filmed got underway at Burghley House.
The original fire occurred on November 20, 1992 after a faulty spotlight set alight a curtain next to the altar in Queen Victoria’s private chapel.
The fire was spotted at 11:30pm and burned for 15 hours, destroying 115 rooms, including nine State Rooms.
Once the fire had been extinguished, there was a huge restoration task ahead, with some rooms being restored to their traditional appearance while others were given a more modern interpretation.
Series five of The Crown will be released on Netflix in November 2022.
