The Presidential Task Force against economic sabotage and multiple taxation has announced that taxes on goods and other items are only permissible at the point of loading and unloading.
The State Team Lead, Mafindi Danburam, issued the warning on Wednesday during the commencement of the demolition of illegal roadblocks set up for multiple taxation on federal highways across Taraba State.
He said the task force is working round the clock to protect highway commuters and haulage drivers from any form of intimidation and harassment by persons mounting illegal roadblocks on federal highways.
“Our mission is to ensure that highway commuters and haulage drivers of goods and services are free from intimidation by those mounting roadblocks on federal highways as tax collectors,” Danburam stated.
Danburam who claimed that there have been complaints about federal highways in Taraba being notorious for multiple taxations, said the development had compelled some commuters of food items and cattle to seek alternative routes
“We are not revenue collectors; our job on the highway is to monitor and ensure that heavy-duty vehicles conveying goods are not taxed illegally.
“Taxes on goods and other items are only permissible at the point of loading and unloading,” he stressed.
Danburam, who warned that any person or groups caught in the act would face the wrath of the law, urged those who have been feeding fat on the illegal trade to as a matter of urgency seek for alternative means to livelihood.
