Taraba State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, has expressed grief over the passing of one of its veteran members in Kaduna State, Jacob Zango.
The leadership of the association outlined the impact of the veteran member’s death on the sports community in Nigeria.
In a statement by SWAN chairman in the state, Sani Suleiman, he said the deceased earned respect and admiration from colleagues, athletes, and sports enthusiasts alike.
“His work not only chronicled the history of sports in Nigeria but also influenced the development of sports journalism in the country.
“His influence extended beyond his writings; he was a pillar of the community, known for his dedication to ethical journalism and his relentless pursuit of excellence,” he stated.
Suleiman, who argued that his death has sparked reflections on the importance of upholding the standards he set and continuing his legacy through mentorship and support for young journalists, said the veteran member’s legacy will undoubtedly live on, inspiring future generations of sports journalists in Nigeria.
He added that there was the need for the Nigerian government to consider immortalizing the deceased veteran member.
