Moeen Ali believes England’s batting strength means they can shuffle their pack to deal with whatever India throw at them in Thursday’s T20 World Cup semi-final.
That means if Phil Salt is picked to replace Dawid Malan, who is battling a groin injury, he would not necessarily take the vacant No.3 spot.
‘The great thing with this side is there’s so many options, you can put Ben Stokes at three, you can put Phil Salt at three, myself or whoever, there’s so many options,’ Moeen said.
‘Mala would obviously be a big miss because he’s a brilliant player in T20 cricket and he has been over a long period of time – that’s if he doesn’t play, I don’t know yet. It doesn’t look great.’ Salt looks the frontrunner to take on India although Malan – who tweaked his left groin and did not bat in the win over Sri Lanka – has not given up hope of being selected.
It is understood England will take no chances, given the magnitude of the game, and Salt’s attacking instincts with the bat are likely to get him the nod over the experienced Chris Jordan, who would bolster the bowling attack.
