Suspect in Orleans Killing Has Been Identified as Army Veteran

The suspect in the New Orleans attack has been identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old U.S.-born citizen and U.S. Army veteran from Texas,

The FBI. Authorities revealed that Jabbar drove a rented Ford F-150 Lightning truck, registered through the Turo app, through a crowd on Bourbon Street at a high rate of speed, covering a three-block stretch killing 15 people and injuring 30.

After crashing the truck, Jabbar exited the vehicle wielding an assault rifle and opened fire on responding police officers. Officers returned fire, killing the suspect. Two police officers were injured in the shootout but are now in stable condition.

Law enforcement officials discovered an ISIS flag tied to the truck’s trailer hitch, leading the FBI to classify the attack as an act of terrorism. Jabbar was confirmed to have ties to ISIS, further solidifying the classification. Investigators also located two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and a grenade at the scene. The crude pipe bombs, containing coils and nails, were rendered safe by authorities. The FBI is investigating whether Jabbar acted alone or had accomplices, as they believe he may not have been solely responsible for the attack.

New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick stated during a press briefing, “This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could. It was not a DUI situation. This is more complex and more serious. He was hell-bent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did.”

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell described the horrific event as a “terrorist attack,” urging residents to remain vigilant. Meanwhile, Louisiana Rep. Troy Carter told ABC News that Jabbar may have lived or spent time in New Orleans, as identification suggesting a local residence was discovered. The vehicle used in the attack bore Texas license plates.

Rodrigo Diaz, the truck’s owner, confirmed that it was rented through the Turo car-sharing platform. Diaz expressed devastation over the incident, while his wife, Dora Diaz, shared similar sentiments, adding that they are cooperating fully with the FBI investigation.

The horrifying attack unfolded as New Year’s celebrations continued on Bourbon Street, a hub of nightlife in New Orleans’ French Quarter, and as the city prepared for the AllState Sugar Bowl. Louisiana Governor  described the incident as a “horrific act of violence” and urged residents to avoid the area as investigations continue.

Our administration will continue to support the investigation and ensure that justice is served.”
