Harry Charles has won gold for Team GB at the Paris 2024 Olympics – 12 years after his father Peter won the same event at London 2012.

Ben Maher, Scott Brash and Charles Jnr won the team jumping final on Friday – Great Britain’s ninth gold medal of the games.

Team GB’s last triumph in this event came at the home Olympics just over a decade ago, but most remarkably the team that day had some familiar faces and names.

Alongside Nick Skelton, Maher, Brash and Charles Snr all triumphed in London.

Father and son Olympians are of course nothing new, but even so Peter Charles described his son’s victory as ‘surreal’.

‘The dream is to win an Olympic gold medal but to do it so young, at his age [25], with two guys I rode with in London, that’s surreal,’ he told BBC Sport.

‘I haven’t had a moment to reflect on it. Brilliant. Nick came up to me and said “at that age, I couldn’t have done that”.

‘He said “that was absolutely brilliant”. Harry’s got many more opportunities if please God everything goes right.

‘It’s a wonderful moment to enjoy, to showcase the sport, how beautiful it is. The horses are the real stars, they jumped fantastically for the riders today.’

Harry was equally gobsmacked, saying: ‘I cannot believe it, last time we won gold these two boys were there with my dad. They have been heroes of mine and to be up next to them on the podium is unbelievable.

‘The round of my life and the horses life and to do it here was amazing. I am very thankful we did it.

‘In Tokyo [2020] we missed my family and friends. It didn’t go amazing for me there, to come back here and to have everyone around is so nice.

‘It is so reassuring. It is nice to have a medal round my neck.’
