The federal government has reiterated that plans are underway to convert most vehicles in the country from fossil fuel to Autogas for cheap transportation costs.

The Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), Bayero Salih-Farah, disclosed this at a one-day stakeholders meeting on the Provision of Technical Manpower and Facility for the Development of Autogas in Abuja on Tuesday.

Recall that following the removal of the fuel subsidy, the cost of transportation and goods and services skyrocketed.

Salih-Farah stressed that the federal government is doing everything to ensure that vehicles are converted to autogas to reduce the adverse effect of fuel subsidy removal.

According to him, Autogas is cheaper and cleaner, becoming a perfect substitute for Premium Motor Spirit.

“We are looking at converting most vehicles in the country from fossil fuel to Autogas. As I said, Gas is cleaner and cheaper. If this is achieved, Nigerians will be able to have cheap transportation.

“As an institute, we are looking at the readiness, manpower and facility to actualize the project”, he stated.

He added that the country needs the technical skills and facilities to exploit its abundant gas reserves as an alternative to a sustainable transportation sector.

Salih-Farah called on stakeholders in the sector to rally around the government by investing in Autogas.

Newspot learnt that Nigeria’s natural gas reserve stood at 206.53 cubic feet.
