Ugo Monye, who is one of the celebrities taking part in this year’s series of Strictly Come Dancing, has split from his wife Lucy just days before the show launches.

The rugby player and Question of Sport team captain was married for five years but has announced that he and his wife have parted ways.

He told The Sun: ‘It’s been hard. At times things have seemed a bit overwhelming but it’s been a tough period for us both.

‘In some relationships there is a moment, a “thing”, that breaks the couple.

‘It can be an exterior influence. It can be anything. But with us it was a number of things.’

Quick not to blame his upcoming venture for the split, he added to the publication: ‘We weren’t in a volatile relationship, we never hated each other and there was no third party.

‘Forget the Strictly curse — it’s the Covid curse! We ended up where we ended up.’

Ugo and Lucy are parents to daughters Phoenix, four, and Ruby, one with the Rugby Union player assuring fans the former couple are on good terms.

He has reportedly already moved out of their West London home but remained positive about doing the right thing for their two children.

Ugo will have found out who his partner throughout the series will be as filming is underway.

The sportsman won 14 caps for his country, after being handed his first back in 2008 and also played for the British and Irish Lions.

Stars taking part in this year’s series include McFly’s Tom Fletcher, Dragons’ Den panellist Sara Davis and BBC Breakfast host, Dan Walker.

Others taking to the floor are EastEnders star Rose Ayling-Ellis, actor Greg Wise and Great British Bake Off winner and TV presenter, John Whaite.

But who will soon find their feet on the Strictly ballroom when the show makes its highly-anticipated comeback next weekend?

Strictly Come Dancing returns on Saturday September 18 on BBC One.
