Strictly Come Dancing’s John Whaite revealed just how much last weekend’s dance meant to him as he felt ‘a wave of emotion’ halfway through his Rumba with Johannes Radebe.

John and Johannes took on the notoriously difficult dance – which they more than managed to pull off.

They even scored a 10 from Rumba queen herself, Shirley Ballas, and had no trouble making it through to the next stage of the competition.

Speaking about the sensitive routine on today’s episode of Strictly: It Takes Two, the Bake Off star explained that he struggled to keep it together as he took the lead through the performance.

John shared to host Janette Manrara: ‘I cried, I was nearly crying halfway through. I had to bite my lip halfway through because I just felt this wave of emotion. All that we’d worked for, all week just came crashing down halfway through.

‘Then for Sting to be watching? I thought, “Oh heck, no pressure!”’

Luckily, John managed to make it through without letting his emotions take over, and absolutely smashed the routine with Johannes.

Judge Craig Revel Horwood even told the pair he wanted to perform their dance at his upcoming wedding to fiancé Jonathan.

Quizzed by Janette on the remark, Johannes said: ‘It’s a massive compliment and I’m humbled. I’m so happy me and John got to display that for the people.’

Lifting the lid on how wonderful it was to get to be more romantic and vulnerable on Saturday night, John added: ‘It was eye opening; it was lovely to get to that stage because so far in this competition, we’ve done very masculine dances, very pally dances.

‘As two blokes who wanted to showcase a romantic, sensitive side as well, I think maybe we’d shied away from that until the Rumba.

‘People were asking for it, you know! Week in, week out, people said, “Could you do something a bit more intimate, a bit closer?”

‘For it to be received with such acceptance and happiness and joy, it kind of speaks volumes for what dance is about.’

John went on to note how it ‘doesn’t matter’ who a dance is between, whether it’s a man or a woman or two men or two women.

‘It’s still two people dedicating themselves for 90 seconds to each other,’ he said. ‘It was just received with such positivity! So thank you everyone for that.’

Janette also celebrated a very special milestone for Johannes this week, as it becomes the furthest he’s got in the competition since he started his stint as a partnered professional in 2019.

It Takes Two airs weekdays from 6.30pm on BBC Two.
