The Osun Leaders of Thought (OLT), a prominent political interest group in Osun State, has urged Governor Ademola Adeleke to resist mounting pressures to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), advising him instead to stay put in the party while supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
In a statement released on Friday, and signed by its Public Affairs Chief, Adesola Adigun, the group described any move for Governor Adeleke to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) as “ill-advised and destabilizing” to both Osun State and the broader national political equilibrium.
“Governor Adeleke should remain in PDP and continue the good work he is doing for the good people of Osun State. Defection would be counterproductive and a political distraction,” the OLT stressed.
The group expressed full support for President Tinubu’s second-term ambition, framing it as a matter of “ancestral and regional loyalty,” given Tinubu’s Osun ancestry. According to the OLT, it would be in the strategic interest of Osun to back Tinubu’s re-election bid while maintaining Adeleke’s political capital within the PDP.
Highlighting the dangers of a party switch, the group outlined four key reasons against it:
-
Governor Adeleke’s unmatched popularity across Osun State;
-
Persistent internal crisis within the state APC;
-
Historic rivalries among Osun political elites;
-
Bipartisan voter sentiment favoring both Adeleke and Tinubu.
“To win Osun, Adeleke’s brand is indispensable for the President — but only if undiluted by unnecessary cross-carpeting,” the statement added.
The OLT warned that merging Adeleke with his former APC adversaries could reignite old tensions and undermine both his administration and President Tinubu’s 2027 chances.
Instead, the group proposed a strategic alliance between Governor Adeleke and the Tinubu Presidency — one that involves mutual support but excludes any form of defection.
“We call on Mr. President and Governor Adeleke to enter into a mutual supportive agreement. Defection must not be part of the conversation,” OLT concluded.
The appeal comes amid a season of political realignments nationwide, with growing concerns about the stability of major political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
