Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would be prepared to block Donny van de Beek leaving the club in January should he push for a transfer, according to reports.

The Dutchman has started just two games for Manchester United this season and is becoming frustrated at a lack of playing time – so few minutes even costing him his place in the national side.

Reports suggest the midfielder could now push for a move away in the new year in a bid to play more football having fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

But ESPN claim Solskjaer would be reluctant to let him leave as he wants to keep his squad together and provide cover for his defensive midfielders ahead of a busy second half of the season.

The Norwegian would prefer to keep his fringe players for now knowing rotation is important in the latter parts of the campaign given their Champions League involvement, and will make a decision on players’ futures in the summer.

That could prove bad news for Van de Beek, who would likely not be short of offers in the transfer window, even on loan.

Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor recently branded the 24-year-old’s situation a ‘joke’ with his £40m transfer from Ajax in the summer of 2020 looking to be bad business so far.

Agbonlahor was speaking after the Netherlands international reacted angrily to being an unused substitute in United’s last Champions League game.

Asked whether he thinks United will let Van de Beek leave in January, Agbonlahor told Football Insider: ‘I think they will.

‘It’s turning into a joke now. United need to just let him go and play football. You’re trapping him at the club and not giving him any minutes.

‘With the performances of Fred and [Scott] McTominay, Van de Beek deserves a chance to show what he can do.

‘Manchester United United need to let him go in January and play some football. The kid just wants to play football.

‘He needs a run of games. Not just the occasional 60 minutes. Give him a run of games.’

Everton could be a potential suitor after director of football Marcel Brands confirmed he tried to sign Van de Beek last summer.

Van de Beek’s current contract with the Red Devils runs until the summer of 2025 with the option of a further year.
