What is the Solheim Cup format?
While the contest is split across three days, there are morning and afternoon sessions on Friday and Saturday but just one session on the Sunday.
On Friday and Saturday morning both teams will play four foursome matches, with two players from each team pairing up and taking turns with the same ball. The lowest score on each hole wins, with a tie if the scores are equal.
In the afternoon of the first two days, the teams will contest fourball matches. Once again this involves two player from each team but, this time, each four golfers use their own ball. The lowest score from either player is used for the team’s overall score for that hole with the best score winning the hole.
Sunday sees both sides play singles matches, with one player from Team Europe facing another from Team USA. All 12 players are involved, with each contest decided by standard match play, with the lowest score winning each hole.
All twelve players cannot play each session on Friday and Saturday, with the team captain deciding who is rested. A player can play all five sessions if selected and must play at least once prior to Sunday singles.
