Arsenal hero Sol Campbell has urged the board to back Mikel Arteta with ‘two or three’ top summer signings after the manager’s promising start since taking over the reins from Unai Emery.

The Gunners will have been desperate to bounce back from their north London derby defeat with a victory over Liverpool on Wednesday night but started slowly at the Emirates and Sadio Mane broke the deadlock midway through the first half.

However, Arsenal responded well to going behind and were gifted two goals thanks to rare mistakes from Virgil van Dijk and Alisson which allowed Alexandre Lacazette and Reiss Nelson to get on the scoresheet before the half-time break.

The north London giants held onto their narrow advantage to beat the newly-crowned Premier League champions and secure three valuable points in their fight to qualify for the Europa League.

Shortly after the final whistle, Arteta pleaded with Arsenal’s hierarchy to give him the financial backing he feels he needs to improve the ‘quality’ in his squad this summer.

Arteta had to settle for just two loan signings in the January transfer window – although Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares’ moves have since been made permanent – and the Spaniard has been sweating over Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future, with less than 12 months remaining on the striker’s current deal.

On whether he has been given a guarantee of funds this summer, he told Sky Sports: ‘I don’t know. (It is) a big concern. You know, you just have to see how they build these squads.

‘There is no magic, you need to improve with quality, quality players in the squad. And you need bigger squads to compete in this competition and this is the challenge.’

Asked for his reaction to Arteta’s candid post-match interview, ex-Arsenal defender Campbell said: ‘I think he’s right.

‘You’ve got to get the determination, you’ve got to want to play for Arsenal, that’s key really.

‘So you have to work hard on the ball, off the ball. But then it comes down to quality. You can’t replace quality, he’s alluded to that.

‘He might need some finance, he doesn’t know if the finance is going to be there.

‘If he can get a little bit and buy a few good players and get some good quality players or move people on and open something for someone to come in then yeah, why not?

‘I think some of the young players have been playing really well.’

Campbell believes his former club should prioritise finding a top-class central defender with view to rebuilding the ‘spine’ of the team.

Asked how many signings Arsenal need, the ex-England international replied: ‘Maybe two or three.

‘They definitely have to look at the centre-half area he has to look at that situation the spine of the team is always important.

‘Let’s see how Emiliano Martinez goes from here, the ‘keeper. But the spine of the team is important.’
