The Football Association has a shortlist of candidates to take the England manager’s job on a full-time basis, with Frank Lampard a surprise name still being considered.

Lee Carsley remains in interim charge of the Three Lions after an impressive start to his stint over the last week.

England won 2-0 against Republic of Ireland in Dublin at the weekend and then downed Finland 2-0 at Wembley on Tuesday night.

They were not the toughest of tests, but Carsley picked a young and vibrant squad which produced attractive football in two comfortable wins.

The former Under-21s manager is now the favourite to take the job on a full-time basis, but no decision has been made and other names remain in the frame.

The Telegraph report that Eddie Howe, Graham Potter, Pep Guardiola and Lampard are all under consideration by the FA.

Lampard is something of a surprise name to be in the frame for the England job after an underwhelming career in club management so far and no work in the international set-up as a coach.

The 46-year-old impressed enough at Derby County in the Championship to get the job at Chelsea in 2019 but he was dismissed in 2021.

Lampard had a forgettable time at Everton in the 2022-23 season, although was managing under difficult circumstances, before returning for a disastrous interim stint at Chelsea last year.

While the ex-midfielder is an England legend and could well still have a future in high-level coaching and management, it would be an incredible career move for him to step up to the Three Lions next.

The bookmakers currently have Carsley as the runaway odds-on favourite to get the full-time job, interestingly now followed by Guardiola in the betting.

The Manchester City manager’s contract with the Premier League champions expires at the end of the season and there is still the possibility that the FA could tempt him into the England role after Carsley’s interim stint.
