Marvel star Simu Liu has poked fun at both himself and those who expected his film, Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, to flop, at the same time.

Not surprising to many of us, the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe outing has been a massive success in pandemic cinema premieres, making $90million (£65m) in America and Canada over its first four days on a usually quiet Labor Day weekend release schedule.

Despite fears cinemagoers wouldn’t flock to the seats, popcorn in hand, Shang-Chi earned the second-biggest opening weekend of the pandemic, behind only Marvel stablemate Black Widow, which took in $80m (£58m) in its opening weekend alongside a simultaneous streaming release (which has caused all the controversy), as per Variety.

Ahead of its release, Liu also fired back at Disney’s CEO for referring to the film as an ‘interesting experiment’ down to the decision to halt Shang-Chi’s streaming release and have it exclusively run in cinemas for 45 days.

Seems Liu is definitely having the last laugh as he reacted to the promising early box office figures while also taking a dig at himself.

He wrote alongside a perfect stock image of himself pointing and smiling at a computer screen: ‘Me laughing at the people who thought we’d flop.’

Recently Liu addressed his past as a stock image model, having found himself picking up any job he could as a struggling actor in Canada, with a shoot he got paid a hundred bucks for continuing to haunt him to this day.

Speaking about his past life recently on The Kelly Clarkson Show, he said: ‘I literally keep seeing it pop up, more so now because people are recognising them and putting them online.

‘I’ve been all around the world. I’ve traveled, I’ve been on like the front of stores, I’ve hung outside gyms, and been on the cover of textbooks. It’s been really wild.’

As fans noticed the star in the cheery office images with telltale stock, bright lighting, Liu previously responded: ‘Got paid 120 bucks and signed away all my rights to them because I was in credit card debt. Now they are everywhere.’

Urging fans to let go of his modelling past, he wrote on Twitter: ‘Legitimately wondering if I am the greatest stock photo model of all time. Totally unrelated note, please stop buying these photos.’

Now it seems he’s totally leaning into it.

Liu has become the first actor of Asian descent to lead a Marvel film with Shang-Chi, which sees the hero drawn into the clandestine Ten Rings organisation and forced to confront his past, in which he was trained to be an assassin from a young age.

The superhero film features a largely Asian cast, including stars Awkwafina, Benedict Wong, Michelle Yeoh, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu and Tony Leung, and is directed by Destin Daniel Crettin.

Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings is in cinemas now.
