Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui was in no mood to entertain questions over the Manchester United job ahead of his side’s Champions League clash against Wolfsburg.

The Spaniard is one of the names linked with the post at Old Trafford following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday.

United parted company with the Norwegian less than 24 hours after the humbling 4-1 defeat away at Watford, which has left the Red Devils languishing in eighth in the table.

Lopetegui, whose Sevilla side beat Solskjaer’s United in the Europa League semi-finals in 2020, is reportedly being considered by the Manchester club as a potential managerial candidate.

But speaking in a press conference ahead of his team’s Champions League group stage game against Wolfsburg on Tuesday, Lopetegui branded the talk about him and United ‘absurd’.

‘Ask me about the Champions League,’ said the 55-year-old.

‘The hope we have of winning tomorrow at Wolfsburg does not allow us to talk about absurd things.’

The current plan for United is for Michael Carrick to take charge on a temporary basis, while they search for an interim boss for the rest of the season.

However, Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino appears to be the club’s frontrunner for the job in the long-term and would reportedly be keen on taking up the role at Old Trafford immediately.

United legend Gary Neville thinks Pochettino would jump at the chance to be the club’s next manager.

‘I think Mauricio Pochettino, he would never say it, but I think he would come to Manchester United on a five-year deal tomorrow,’ Neville told Sky Sports.

‘He would look at that group of players, he would look at that club and I think he would be able to achieve more than of what he wants at Manchester United in terms of a project.

‘At PSG, you are judged season by season, win the Champions League or you’re out type of model.

‘For me, I think Mauricio Pochettino would absolutely come to Manchester United on a five-year deal with backing behind him.’
