Sergio Aguero has dismissed concerns that Arsenal’s squad will be exposed as they battle Manchester City for the Premier League title.
Arsenal look set to be defending champions Man City’s biggest rivals this season, having won 11 of their 13 league games this season.
The Gunners’ form under Mikel Arteta has seen Arsenal move two points clear of Manchester City and 11 points ahead of fifth-placed Manchester United.
Despite this, there is a feeling that Arsenal could fall away once they start to encounter injury issues due to the perceived lack of depth in Arteta’s squad.
But Aguero – who won five Premier Leagues at the Etihad – believes Arsenal’s squad is strong enough to win the title.
He told Stake: ‘Arsenal have had a great performance in this stretch and Man City, despite the setback against Liverpool, remain close. We’ll see what happens after the World Cup.
‘Arsenal have a deep squad. More than anything because they know what style they want to play and it shows that they are hungry for triumphs.
‘There is also the possibility of incorporating in the winter market and if Mikel Arteta sees that he needs some reinforcement – as other teams will too – then he will ask for them.
‘But since you’re asking me about Arsenal, look at what happened a few days ago when Bukayo Saka was injured. Reiss Nelson came on, a player that no one had in their plans – it is clear that Arteta did – and he was the star of the match.
‘So I don’t think Arsenal have a short squad.’
Aguero also claimed it would be foolish to rule Liverpool out of the title race despite their dismal start to the Premier League season.
The Reds were expected to challenge Manchester City for the title after finishing one point behind the champions last season, reaching the Champions League final and winning two domestic trophies.
But Liverpool are just eighth in the table – seven points outside the top-four places and 15 points behind Arsenal – having suffered shock defeats to Nottingham Forest and Leeds United in recent weeks.
Aguero added: ‘If there is something that the Premier League has shown over the last few years, it is that nothing should be taken for granted.
‘And even more so with a team like Liverpool, who had the misfortune of having many injured players in this part of the season.
‘I always give the title that we won with Man City in 2012 as an example. We were eight points behind Man United, there were few games left, we managed to come back and win the title in the last minute on goal difference.
‘That’s what makes it such an exciting competition.’
One more round of Premier League matches will take place this weekend before the season breaks for over a month for the Qatar World Cup.
