Senate considers legislative framework for solid minerals

The Senate Committee Chairman on Solid Minerals Development, Osita Ngwu, has disclosed that the upper legislative chamber is working on a legislative framework to address the challenges in the solid mineral industry.

This was according to a statement released on Monday by the Head of Press, Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office, Folasade Fatoke.

In the statement, Ngwu commended the Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office for migrating to an electronic mining cadastre in line with best practices during a recent familiarisation visit to the MCO.

He further commended the Director General of the MCO, Obadiah Nkom, and his team for the continuous rise in its revenue profile since its inception.

He was also quoted as saying, “The Government is looking at gas exploration and solid mineral but we know the challenges of the solid mineral industry, putting all these challenges together, we are going to look at the legislative framework and get the system working.”

The statement added, “The Senate Committee Chairman expressed the need for all to work together despite challenges facing the sector. He assured full support of the Senate so as to make the desired progress in the sector.”

The Senate Committee Chairman also pledged unfailing support of the National Assembly and partnership with the agency, adding “There will be meetings that we are all going to do that will require us to make contributions. The bottom line is for us to achieve the set objectives and support the government”.

The MCO DG further solicited assistance and inputs from the National Assembly to improve the Mining Cadastre Office and transform the mining sector in the country.
