Sensing the Mohbad’s candlelight procession might turned into another End Sars protest, in view of the pains being experienced by the masses in Nigeria following the removal of oil subsidy, the security agents quickly deployed their men to disrupt the procession with the use of teargas.
Scores take to their heels as tear gas fumes enveloped the mourners during the candlelight procession on Thursday night 21 September 2023
The procession started earlier in the evening at Lekki Phase 1 and the memorial concert began later by 8 PM at the Muri Okunola Park in Victoria Island, Lagos.
However, by 11pm, those still carrying on the procession at Lekki began crying out on social media that they were teargased by the police to disperse them.
Videos from the scene show people running as smoke from the tear gas rises all around them.

A senior police officer who wished to remain anonymous told newspot that: ” We don’t want to leave anything to chance. We are at alert with the Labour threat of indefinite strike. We are not sure what form it will take. If we allow peaceful candlelight to be hijacked by miscreants and turn it into riotous procession we will have ourselves to blame.
” There is tension in the land. Agitations that greeted the oil subsidy are still on. We can only plead with the masses to bear with the government as things have started to get better. “
