…..SDP Members Frown At Adeniran’s Decision
Prof. Tunde Adeniran former Education Minister and Nigeria’s one time Ambassador to Germany has resigned from office as National Chairman of SDP with immediate effect.
A statement signed by the State Secretary of the party Dr Shola Agboola said Adeniran’s decision to quit partisan politics at the age of 75 was announced during the NWC meeting of the party which took place on 29th September, 2020, and same was said to have been communicated to INEC.
Though Prof Adeniran claimed his decision was influenced by his family, but party members believed that the premature resignation was not unconnected with the on going case against the validity of his National Chairmanship, which comes up at Federal High Court, Abuja ( FHC/A/CS/1358/2020) on 8th October, 2020.
More worrisome is the choice of his successor, Dr Abdul Ahmed Isiaq,(Deputy National Chairman- North); who was handed over to against the spirit and letter of the party’s constitution.
Article 13 of SDP Constitution unambiguously states that if the National Chairman is resigning before the expiration of his tenure, he should hand over to any NEC member from his zone. In order words, the automatic slot of the Acting National Chairmanship belongs to the South West ( where Adeniran comes from) and not the North; more so when the current National Secretary is also from the North. It is believed that this constitutional error will be corrected before it degenerates.
