Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State has said the ongoing screening exercise of pensioners in the state is meant to cleanse the system from pension scams and other financial irregularities.

Speaking to Journalists after monitoring the exercise in Minna, the governor said the exercise was not to cause any hardship to the pensioners but to sanitize the system and ensure pensioners are not shortchanged.

He said, “the whole essence of the screening is not to inconvenience anyone, but I have received reports of many innocent pensioners that have not been receiving their pension.

“We have also received reports of a lot of fraud when it comes to pension. I have always known that there is some kind of sharp practices when it comes to pension payment”.

Bello also called on the pensioners across the 25 local governments of the state to be patient with the exercise as he is optimistic, it will achieve the desired objectives.

The Governor directed the Screening Committee to pay those that have already been cleared, while the pensioners who are sick or very weak to withstand the rigour of the exercise should be followed to their houses to get them screened.

Some of the pensioners who spoke on the exercise commended the state governments’ for the process, saying it will go a long way in assisting to uncover sharp practices as well as block leakages in the state.
