Reports on Thursday claimed United chiefs were considering alternatives to Ten Hag with Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Anorim and out of work Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane under consideration.
United subsequently issued a strong rebuttal and denied there was any intention of replacing a manager who had steered the club back to the Champions League at the first attempt last season.
McTominay, meanwhile, appeared to be on the verge of leaving the club in the summer but a proposed move to West Ham failed to materialise.
The Scotland international subsequently started the season on the bench but has forced his way back into the reckoning in recent weeks and spared his manager’s blushes last month with two injury-time goals in a comeback win over Brentford.
‘Obviously the fans will hear the generic response of “we’ve got to stick together”, but it’s true.
Everyone wants this football club to succeed and we have to pull together and try to be as good with each other as possible in the dressing-room to get those results going our way.
‘I feel like we’ve got more than enough talent in the changing room to do that. But obviously something isn’t quite clicking. That’s up to the manager and the players to fix that, and I’m 100 per cent confident that we will.’
McTominay believes the key to turning the corner will be to block out he external noise and ‘fight like dogs’ to put things right.
‘We have to win, that’s always the thought process,’ he added. ‘Obviously my thoughts are with the fans at the minute because we’re not playing well and it’s difficult for them.
‘They pay their hard-earned money every week to come and watch us, and the least we can do is play well and win football matches.’
