England and Scotland renew their historic rivalry in Glasgow this evening, with the two sides coming together for a special friendly to mark the 150th anniversary of the first meeting between the two.

Scotland hosted the ‘Auld Enemy’ at the West of Scotland Cricket Club in 1872, with around 4,000 fans turning out to watch the goalless draw in what was the very first international match to be played in the beautiful game.

The fixture took place annually between 1884 and 1989, but since then England vs Scotland has become something of a rarity with only eight matches having been held in the past 33 years.

So, let’s crunch the numbers and see which team can boast the bragging rights as one of football’s most special encounters takes centre stage once again this evening.

Who has won the most games between England and Scotland?

England currently edge the all-time head-to-head record with 48 wins to Scotland’s 41, alongside 27 draws.

Of the games contested south of the border, England have won 28 games to Scotland’s 18.

England are also the dominant side north of the border with 23 wins to Scotland’s 20.

The majority of the matches (85) have taken place in the now discontinued British Home Championships, which ran for around a century between 1883-1984.

England and Wolves’ legendary centre back Billy Wright has the honour of appearing most in the fixture, pulling on the Three Lions shirt 13 times against the great rivals.

How many goals have been scored between the two sides?

A total of 377 goals have been scored in fixtures between the two nations, at an impressive 3.28 goals per game, with England leading by 203 goals to Scotland’s 174.

Former Derby and Middlesbrough striker Steve Bloomer is the top goalscorer in the fixture with eight goals from 10 games between April 1895 and April 1907.

George Kerr has the honour of being the Tartan Army’s highest goalscorer with his seven strikes arriving in just three matches.

England are currently in possession of the biggest win in the rivalry courtesy of their 9-3 triumph at Wembley in April 1961.

England have tasted defeat just once in the past 12 meetings (W8 D3) between the two sides – a 1-0 home defeat in a Euro 2000 play-off at Wembley 24 years ago.

That, however, was not enough to see the Scots qualify for the tournament with England running out 2-0 winners in Glasgow.

The last game between England and Scotland was the Euro 2020 group stage clash at Wembley which ended in a drab 0-0 draw.

The Three Lions have not lost in four encounters (W2 D2) at Hampden, the venue for tonight’s game, since a 1-0 defeat in May 1985.
