Ruud van Nistelrooy expects to learn if he will be staying on at Manchester United ‘today or tomorrow’ after his spell as interim manager came to an end.

Ruben Amorim will officially begin duties at Old Trafford on Monday with van Nistelrooy signing off in style against Leicester City on Sunday with a 3-0 victory.

The Dutchman was placed in temporary charge after Erik ten Hag was relieved of his duties last month.

Under his management, United were unbeaten in four games, beating Leicester twice in the Carabao Cup and Premier League either side of a draw with Chelsea and victory over PAOK in the Europa League.

Van Nistelrooy joined Ten Hag’s backroom staff last summer and remains under contract until 2026. The 48-year-old has expressed his desire to stay on under Amorim but the with the Portuguese expected to arrive with his own trusted team, the United legend’s future is uncertain.

Speaking after Sunday’s win, van Nistelrooy explained the club have been in constant and clear communication over his role with he and his staff now waiting to learn what their future holds.

‘I appreciated the clear communication that it was an interim spell for the short-term,’ van Nistelrooy said.

‘It could have been one game, that was the first communication, they kept me in the loop and say if it’s going to be four with a new coach announced. It is important for me to have that clarity and I appreciated that.

‘In the end, the most important thing is this football club and I am here to support that in my role. I want to continue doing that in the future.

‘It was said after the four games, there will be more communication to you and your colleagues who are also in an uncertain situation, so I expect to hear today or tomorrow from them.’

Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring for United against Leicester with a fine effort from the edge of the box, beautifully set up by Amad Diallo.

A header from Fernandes eventually went down as a Victor Kristiansen own goal with Alejandro Garnacho curling home a superb third late on.
