Ruben Amorim has stunningly admitted he ‘doesn’t like’ Manchester United fans chanting his name, but is ‘really honoured’ by the gesture.
The United head coach has won two of his first three games in charge of the club, and while far from perfect, the team have shown great signs of improvement.
Red Devils fans have wasted no time in trying to make the new boss feel welcome at Old Trafford, quickly coming up with a chant for him.
Supporters have been singing ‘Ruben Amorim’ and ‘Ruben’s at the wheel’ to the tune of Give It Up by KC and the Sunshine Band, with the song heard loud and clear during the 4-0 Premier League win against Everton on Sunday.
But when asked about the chant and the growing connection between himself and fans, Amorim revealed he was a little uncomfortable with being serenaded.
‘I don’t like my chant. I don’t like it,’ the 39-year-old said while smiling in his press conference ahead of Wednesday night’s clash at Arsenal.
‘I feel a little bit… not embarrassed but because I’m the coach. They have to chant for the players and for the club, so it’s not a good thing for me.
‘I understand and I really appreciate the connection with the supporters, but I want them to support the team and the players, because they are on the pitch – I’m more outside the pitch.
‘I’m really honoured about that and I feel a connection with the supporters, but we know that we need results to maintain that.’
Amorim may have to get used to the chants however, if he turns out to be the man who brings the good times back to Old Trafford after a decade of decline since Sir Alex Ferguson departed.
Arsenal will provide the sternest challenge of his reign so far and the Portuguese has told his players they must be ‘brave’ against the Gunners.
‘It’s the best team that we’ve faced, by far. But the test is every game,’ he added.
‘Every game now is a test without so many minutes to train. Arsenal are… I know it’s not easy for [a] Manchester United [head coach] to say, but they are in a different point of their team. They are in a different moment.
‘It’s important to be brave. When I say brave, it’s not pressing all the time higher. It’s not the same. You have to understand the moments of the game.
‘We need to have the ball, that is a key point. We want to have the ball, we want also to dominate some moments of the game because we know that in these matches it’s hard to control all the game.’
