Shaun Murphy is looking to win a tenth ranking title on Sunday at the Welsh Open, but Ronnie O’Sullivan reckons he should have picked up more trophies than he has done over his career so far.

The Magician takes on Robert Milkins in Llandudno as he looks to win the Welsh Open for a second time, a win which would be his first ranking title since 2020.

The 40-year-old has completed snooker’s Triple Crown of the World Championship, UK Championship and Masters, while he has other big wins at the likes of the China Championship and World Grand Prix.

It is far from over yet but it has already been a career that few in the history of the game can match, however, the Rocket thinks it should have been even better.

It is certainly a compliment from the world champion, saying that Murphy does not win events regularly enough, when he has picked up plenty of silverware in his career so far.

‘He doesn’t win enough tournaments for me, with his game,’ O’Sullivan said on Eurosport.

‘I don’t know what it is, whether it’s a lack of killer instinct or something. Sometimes you’ve got to be a bit nasty on the table and he doesn’t look like he’s had it.

‘But he’s won the big tournaments, the Masters, the Worlds, nine ranking events, but that’s not a great return for the type of game he plays.’

Murphy’s nine ranking titles mean there are only 10 players to have won more than him, he has also been to three World Championship finals, which he ended up on the wrong end of.

The Magician has also picked up a number of big non-ranking titles, the 2015 Masters was the biggest of those, but he has also won the Champion of Champions and Premier League, among others.

It has been quite a career, but the Rocket reckons it could have featured even more silverware.
