The Belgian had been given extra time off by Chelsea and told he did not need to return for pre-season in London as Inter Milan worked on a deal to sign the striker on a permanent basis.
However, after having two bids rejected, Inter have pulled the plug on negotiations after learning Chelsea had held talks with Juventus at the same time.
Inter sold Lukaku to Chelsea in 2021 for a fee of £97m and they took him back on loan in 2022.
The Italians felt there was an unwritten understanding that they were first in the queue to sign the striker this summer, even following Chelsea’s decision to reject two offers.
Lukaku, for his part, has made it clear that he wants to return to the San Siro but Chelsea will sell to the highest bidder.
It’s opened up the possibility that Lukaku could remain at Stamford Bridge this summer and the Mail say he will return to Cobham on Monday to resume pre-season training.
However, Lukaku will not form part of the squad that travels to the United States with Mauricio Pochettino as the uncertainty over his future continues.
Pochettino ideally wanted all departures sanctioned before the club travel to the United States.
The Argentine prefers operating with a smaller squad and Chelsea had by far the biggest playing squad in the Premier League last season.
