Boss Brendan Rodgers has warned Leicester need to make an impact in the transfer market this month after two quiet transfer windows.

The Foxes manager, who leads his injury-hit team into a Carabao Cup quarter-final at Newcastle tonight, is hoping for new signings after Wout Faes was the only outfield arrival last year, despite the £70million sale of Wesley Fofana to Chelsea.

‘The last two windows we have brought in one outfield player. Go through a third and you don’t do anything it just makes it a challenge,’ said Rodgers. ‘They have said there will be some funds to do some work.

‘If we can do that and get some players back it’ll be a good second half of the season for us. I have to respect the club to get the deals over the line.’

The Foxes travel to Newcastle looking to avenge a 3-0 defeat at St James’ Park on Boxing Day.

Rodgers said: ‘We didn’t show our true selves. We know we have the capacity to get a good result.’

The Foxes squeezed through Saturday’s FA Cup tie at Gillingham – the team rock bottom of the Football League – and that 1-0 win will not instill great confidence they can see off one of the most improved teams in the country this season.

In fact, three of Leicester’s last four victories have come against EFL sides (Newport, MK Dons and the Gills), while the Magpies tumbled out of the FA Cup on Saturday at League One Sheffield Wednesday.

There is speculation Eddie Howe hopes to land Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans this month while Brendan Rodgers’ other main man, James Maddison, continues to frustratingly sit on the sidelines with injury
