Nigeria Professional Football League champions Rivers United will know their group opponents for the 2022/23 CAF Confederation Cup on Wednesday, The PUNCH reports.
CAF had fixed the date for the draw earlier this month after the final round of preliminary games for the CAF Champions League.
“The draw will be conducted in Cairo, Egypt starting with CAF Confederation Cup at 13h00 (11h00 GMT) and CAF Champions League at 14h00 (12h00 GMT),” CAF announced in a statement on its website.
Having missed out on a Champions League spot, Rivers United were drawn in the Confederation Cup, following a 6-1 aggregate win over Al Nasr of Libya in the play-offs.
They won the first leg 5-0 in Port Harcourt and followed it up with a 1-1 draw in Benghazi.
The NPFL champions are the only Nigerian team left on the continent, following the failure of Plateau United to scale the hurdle of Al Akhdar of Libya in the second leg of their Confederation Cup playoff.
Before then, Remo Stars were bundled out in the first round of the CAF Confederation Cup preliminaries, just as Kwara United didn’t survive against RS Berkane of Morocco.
The Confederation Cup draw is dominated by North African teams, with six clubs from Libya, Morocco, Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia; followed by West Africa with four from Nigeria, Mali, Ivory Coast and Togo, just as Central Africa has three clubs from DR Congo and one other from Congo to make four as well; while South Africa and East Africa produced one club each.
The qualified teams are Rivers United, Al Akhdar (Libya), ASFAR (Morocco), Real Bamako (Mali), ASEC Mimosas (Ivory Coast), ASKO de Cara (Togo), Montena Pembe (DRC), Diables Noirs (Congo), Saint Eloi Lupopo (DRC), Future FC (Egypt), Marumo Gallants FC (South Africa), Pyramids FC (Egypt), TP Mazembe (DRC), US Monastir (Tunisia), USM Alger (Algeria) and Young Africans (Tanzania).
