Opposition lawmakers’ coalition spokesperson, Hon Ikenga Ugochinyere has called on the federal government and relevant security agencies to ensure that the minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike and his supporters face justice over alleged burning of local government headquarters in Rivers State.
Recall that in response to recent tensions following last Saturday’s local government council election, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed deep concern over reports of arson and explosions in the state.
He urged all political actors to de-escalate the situation and discourage their supporters from engaging in violence or destructive actions.
Ugochinyere in a statement on Tuesday, commended the State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara for setting up a judicial panel of inquiry, saying that if Wike and his cohorts were found culpable, they should be charged and prosecuted.
He said, “All these explanations on TV by Nyesom Wike, I don’t understand why he’s crying, so the only thing I will advise is that there’s no way he will escape the involvement of his supporters which I’m beginning to believe from his television comments that he’s fully aware, that he might be part of it.
“I commend the state government for setting up a judicial panel of enquiry. It doesn’t matter who you are, the panel must sit. If indeed he’s involved in this treasonable act to destroy another arm of government and burn it to the ground, then he should be charged, prosecuted.
“What are we pampering? A whole state, a whole government will be your own? Because you came from where? What is it? I want to thank the state government for setting up a judicial panel of inquiry.
“All those that are involved, the office of the Attorney General should prosecute them. If they burn a government at the local level, they will burn state, federal and democracy.
“Government needs to deal with it decisively because the consequences will be a lot, hiding behind being a supporter of the president to do the unthinkable.”
