The 20-year-old has shone in Qatar this month, playing a key role in Croatia reaching the knockout stages of the competition with a stand-out performance against Belgium – denying Romelu Lukaku with a last-ditch tackle.
The RB Leipzig defender was chased by Chelsea during the summer transfer window having reportedly seen a huge bid of £77million rejected.
Gvardiol suggested last week he was still open to a move to Stamford Bridge and former Manchester United and England star Ferdinand believes he has the tools to be one of the best defenders in the world.
‘I have to say, he has been my favourite defender to watch in the tournament so far,’ Ferdinand told BBC ahead of Croatia’s last 16 clash against Japan.
‘He has got a great presence, he is happy for the battles, very physical and has a wand for a left foot.
‘He has got pace too and I think all those attributes you need as a modern day defender.
‘He can pay the ball over various distances, he has pinpoint accuracy. He beats any type of press, is comfortable on either foot and is as comfortable with the ball at his feet as he is running out with it defensively.
‘Also, the aggressiveness. He is willing to get forward, that youth, that fearlessness.
‘He has quick enough feet for someone of his size. Everything about him for me has been so positive.’
Gvardiol was asked about a move to Chelsea following the 0-0 draw against Belgium last week, suggesting a move to Stamford Bridge remains a firm possibility.
Chelsea are unlikely to be the only club interested in his services however with the defender also talking up a move to Real Madrid to play alongside countryman Luka Modric.
‘Real Madrid is the biggest club in the world. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll be able to play there. I’d like it,’ Gvardiol told Relevo.
‘Modric doesn’t have to tell me anything, not needed – I know how special is to be linked with Real Madrid.’
