One of the hallmark of democratic lawmaking is multi voices and opinion. I hope we are not getting to the point where people just follow. No dissenting voices. Why is this important. Dissent give you opportunity to hear other opinions and therefore pressures everyone to do some research before coming to plenary.
If the lawmakers allowed themselves this privilege they would have researched and found out why the old (now the new) anthem was abandoned.
The reason the old anthem was abolished and replaced was because it was insulting and damaging to nigeria as a people. It was derogatory and made a mockery of our citizenship and origin.
It described Nig as a “native land” a term used to express a people without civilization. It used tribes and tongue to ascribe our relationship with one another. Tribesmen are terms used to connote primitivism. These terms are barbaric and not modern.
No one anthem in the world bears these emblems.
An anthem says so much about a people’s aspirations and development spirit.
As much as our tongues differ they don’t define us. We are a land filled with milk and honey and the world must know about our reaches not our problems.
Our citizenship bestows on us a world waiting for the world to be part of and explore. While other countries are opening up their citizenship we are celebrating our native ancestry.
There are many non indigenous Nigerians who are now Nigerian citizens. How does our anthem embrace them.
Rwanda recognized the deadly nature of tribes and tribes consciousness and completely erased it by law which promotes citizenship and equality.
Today you can’t refer to people by their tribes or language.
This law would never have been if our leaders did some basic research and had basic understanding about what they were legislating. And this is another product of “Oyes” mentality and zombie politics.
Even the rush to sign it was a huge mistake and reflects the actual hidden intend for the bill all together.
Just a sad debasing narrative for us as a nation and the quality of leadership we have had to endure for so long now.
