Many pensioners in Abia State have confirmed the report that their accumulated pensions owed by previous administrations in the State have been paid.

The pension payments, according to the Abia State government, were owed between 2014 and part of 2023.

Governor Alex Otti, while addressing the congregation at Christ The King Catholic Church (CKC) at Aba on Thursday, had declared that “some of you (Pensioners) have been owed since 2014. At the end of today (Thursday, March 28, 2024), all of you will smile. Check your accounts at the end of business today.”

He had also earlier in his address to Abia people, promised to clear the backlog of accumulated pensions by the first quarter of 2024.

Checks carried out by Newspot on Thursday evening confirmed that the State government has paid the pensions.

Some of the pensioners, who included Mrs Lucy Samuel Nne, Onyema Agbandu and Kalu Ogbonna said they got bank alerts.

The elated retirees thanked Governor Otti for the payment, saying he kept to his campaign promise.

The pensioners berated previous administrations in Abia, especially the immediate past, for allegedly treating them rough.

The Chairman of Concerned Abia Pensioners, Emeka Okezie who regularly led protests against the previous Abia State government, could not be reached for his reaction as at the time of this report.

However, some pensioners told Newspot on Thursday evening that they were yet to receive their own credit alert.
