The House of Representatives Committee on Federal Capital Territory Judiciary on Thursday visited some FCT courts and tasked the judiciary to ensure effectiveness and efficiency in its operations.
Chairman of the House Committee on FCT Judiciary, Adamu Ibrahim Gamawa who led other members of his committee for the oversight visit to FCT High Court and Customary Court said the visit is in line with the constitution’s provisions which empower the legislators to carry out oversight roles.
Gamawa stated that the visit was not to witch-hunt anybody but aimed at assessing the condition of the courts and coming up with possible ways of addressing the challenges.
He noted that the visit enables them to know the state of some of the ongoing projects.
He said the performance or utilization of the previously appropriated funds including the 2024 budget will also determine what should be provided in the 2025 budget for the FCT Judiciary.
Like the State Houses of Assembly, the National Assembly serves as a parliament for the FCT, Abuja.
Chief Registrar, High Court of the FCT, Hadisa Dodo, in her remark, solicited the assistance of the committee over what she called pressing and urgent difficulties.
Some of the challenges according to her include underfunding of the construction of the High Court complex in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, inadequate funding for construction of Magistrates quarters and additional courtrooms, and inadequate official vehicles among others.
