A chieftain of Alliance for Democracy in Oyo State, Engineer Oyedele Hakeem Alao, has advised Governor Seyi Makinde to take drastic action in order to clear refuse that has taken over major roads and streets in Ibadan, the state capital.

A Newspot correspondent, who went round some areas in Ibadan such as Eleyele – Polytechnic Ibadan Road, Sango, Challenge, Mokola, Agodi Gate, Bodija, Iwo Road, Adamasingba and Dugbe, observed that refuse currently litters the areas due to indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the medians of the road.

Alao, who contested the gubernatorial election on the platform of AD in 2019, has advised the governor to act fast.

He noted that Makinde should act fast in order to avert major disasters such as cholera and other epidemics.

The AD chieftain, in a statement made available to journalists on Friday in Ibadan through his Media Aide, Omotayo Iyanda, noted that heaps of refuse had piled up in places like Mapo, Bere, Oje, Sango, Mokola and Challenge.

Alao said, “It becomes imperative to echo the essence of cleaning up our society, more so, when Governor Makinde has refused to look at that direction lately by incapacitating the local government authorities and ignoring the stakeholders who have been calling for the removal of the filthy sites that have taken over the city.

“The concerned stakeholders in the state have been calling on Makinde over the last two-three weeks and neither the governor, his aides nor the agency in charge of waste management has practically done anything to reverse the sordid situation.

“The local government authorities which ought to be saddled with the responsibility of waste management have been rendered incapacitated because the governor wants everybody to see him as a superhero.

“Honestly, it is not only refuse that have taken over the city, also most drainages have been blocked by filths of all kinds. It is the slabs that cover up the dirt in the channels around the city”.

The Asiwaju of Iroko in Akinyele Local Government Area, while speaking further, noted that Makinde should act fast in order to avert a major disaster such as cholera.

“Cholera and other transmittable diseases are associated with an unclean environment.

“So, not paying attention to or taking urgent action to clean up the filthy materials and remove other dangerous outgrowths that can jeopardize our people in our environment is the height of irresponsibility,” he said.

Alao concluded by enjoining Makinde “to rise up and clean up all the mess around the city and initiate a permanent waste management system that will permanently move all these ugly sights away from Ibadan.”
