Mr Haruna Barnabas of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been declared the winner of the re-run election in Chawai/Kauri in the Kauru federal constituency in Kaduna State.
The Returning Officer, Professor Mohammed Sani Salau said Haruna Barnabas scored 23, 687 votes to defeat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Yohana Chawai with 23,656 votes.
“I, Professor Mohammed Sani Salau, hereby certify that I am the Returning Officer of the Chawai/Kauru 2023 House of Assembly election which was held on 15th April 2023 and that Haruna Barnabas of the APC, having satisfied the law, has been returned unopposed and declared winner of the election.”
He said the House of Assembly election in the constituency had been declared inconclusive after the March 18, House of Assembly election and two polling units, in two wards were rescheduled for the re-run election.
He explained that in the Kwassam ward, the re-run took place in one ward and had only 50 registered voters but only 45 accredited voters came out for the election, pointing out that the APC got 28 votes and PDP received 11 votes while 6 votes were rejected.
The Returning Officer stated in Kauru East ward, in Kahuta polling unit, there were 995 registered voters but 419 accredited voters came for the election, adding that 464 voters were accredited in the two wards.
He said APC polled 338 votes and PDP polled 111 votes in the re-run election.
Samuel Arabo, the PDP collation officer for the re-run in Karau local government area described the election as a real scandal, saying, “The eligible voters were intimidated by thugs who caused confusion in the place and did not allow the voters to exercise their franchise. The voters were denied the opportunity to cast their votes because when PDP was leading, the only way the APC could do was to cause confusion through their thugs and as a result of the whole confusion, PDP did not sign the result.”
The PDP House of Assembly candidate for Chawai/Kauru, Yohana Chawai described the re-run election as a comedy that was marked with action.
