Making his first start of the season, Hojlund put his injury troubles behind him to score in the first half and give the Red Devils a 2-0 lead.
However, Erik ten Hag’s side capitulated shortly after and ultimately needed Harry Maguire’s late header to rescue a 3-3 draw in the Estadio do Dragao.
Still keen to celebrate his goal, Hojlund posted a picture on Instagram shortly after full-time with the caption: ‘Luckily I had 6 weeks to practice my celebration. A win would’ve made it perfect.’
However, his upbeat post did not go down well with some United fans who took aim at the striker for celebrating his goal after another disappointing defeat in Europe which piled further pressure on Ten Hag.
Returning to the platform to explain the post, Hojlund insisted he never intended to distract from the result but asked fans to move on and focus on Sunday’s crunch fixture against Aston Villa.
‘I’ve seen some anger about my post of yesterday,’ the Dane said on his Instagram story.
‘I never intended that… I was only happy to be back out there on the scoresheet again after a tough few weeks where I couldn’t play and score.
‘Obviously we go for the win and I will give everything to make you guys happy, sorry yesterday’s post was not the case.
‘Let’s move on, getting ready to give everything again on Sunday.’
Speaking after the game, Ten Hag was pleased to welcome Hojlund back into the first-team picture and is hopeful that the 21-year-old can play his part in turning around United’s fortunes.
‘I’m very pleased with the return of Rasmus Hojlund. I think he had a good return, but we couldn’t play him in the first two months of the season,’ he said.
‘Hopefully he is now fit. He keeps improving in his fitness levels and that he also has a consistent fit season that will help us.’
