Rangers legend Ally McCoist believes £12million would be a fair price for Alfredo Morelos, admitting Gers are likely to cash in on their star striker this summer if a bid comes in.
The 24-year-old Colombian forward has been strongly linked with an Ibrox exit after a fine season in Glasgow, scoring 29 goals and providing 10 assists in all competitions.
Ligue 1 side Lille have even held talks with the Scottish Premiership club over a possible transfer, with contrasting claims over his immediate future. Reports in France claim he has already agreed personal terms, while other rumours suggest there have been no official bids yet.
The new Premiership season gets underway this weekend, with Rangers’ 2020/21 campaign opener against Aberdeen scheduled for Saturday August 1, so manager Steven Gerrard doesn’t have long to find a replacement if Morelos does go.
Rangers fans have been insisting on social media that the club should be looking to get at least £25m for their prize asset, who is the joint top scorer in this season’s Europa League and a full Colombia international.
And when you consider Liverpool managed to get £20m for Dominic Solanke, Swansea sold Oli McBurnie to Sheffield United for £20m and Birmingham have just sold a 17-year-old Jude Bellingham to Borussia Dortmund for £25m, it does appear to be a fair price.
McCoist, though, believes Rangers will accept a fee of closer to £12m or £13m if a club make their interest official this summer.
And if Morelos does go, the former striker insists Gerrard must replace him if Gers want to challenge Old Firm rivals Celtic this term.
“I’ll be very disappointed if he leaves and Rangers don’t get a replacement and good money for him,” the Ibrox legend said on the talkSPORT Breakfast.
“Listen, if Neil Lennon can come out and say every Celtic player has a price on their head, I think it’s safe to say every player in Scotland has.
“Morelos has been excellent, excellent, in terms of his goal return for Rangers, particularly in Europe last season, some of his goals have been wonderful.
“He still hasn’t scored against Celtic, which is a big question mark because I always think Old Firm centre-forwards have got to score against each other, I think it’s very important to do that.
“He has got a question over his temperament as well, his disciplinary record hasn’t been good and he’s let himself, Steven and his teammates down on one or two occasions.
“It had got better it has to be said, but it’s still not perfect.
“But he’s clearly a very, very talented player who has scored goals and will score goals wherever he goes.
“I think Steven will accept an offer if it’s the correct offer, I really do.
“I haven spoken to him, so I don’t know, but I definitely think if Rangers get an offer that they find acceptable then he will be on his way.
“The reports talking about £20m… but I think if they get an offer of £12m or maybe £13m they would accept it.”
While Lille have been linked, there is rumoured interest from England too, with reports claiming Leicester, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace are keen on Morelos.
And McCoist believes he is ready to be a Premier League player.
“I think he’s one of those players who has set his heart on a move,” added the Ibrox hero.
“I think he wants to play in the Premier League and I think he could probably do that.”
