Manchester United may have just landed a secret weapon in their pursuit of Chelsea striker Timo Werner, with newly appointed coach Sascha Lense having very close ties to the forward.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick has been keen to add fresh blood and ideas to his United coaching staff and confirmed on Tuesday that former New York Red Bulls head coach Chris Armas and sports psychologist Lense had both joined his backroom team.

In addition to strengthening his staff, Rangnick is also believed to be keen to make some moves in the transfer market with reports in Germany claiming he has his eye on Werner.

The striker played – and thrived – under Rangnick at RB Leipzig, but has struggled to replicate his Bundesliga form since moving to the Premier League.

He has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge, with Barcelona – who are in desperate need of firepower due to injuries and the absence of Sergio Aguero – also interested in the 25-year-old.

But United may have the upper hand thanks to the appointment of Lense, whose daughter, Paula, has been dating Werner since 2017.

According to SportBild, the pair met while the forward was playing in Leipzig, with future father-in-law and sports psychologist Lense also at the German club at the time.

Paula moved to London with Werner last summer, having wanted to study English, and the arrival of her father in Manchester could make a move to Old Trafford appealing for the out-of-form frontman.

Werner struck up an excellent relationship with both Lense and Rangnick during his time in Leipzig, and a reunion with some familiar faces could be exactly what he needs to re-find his scoring touch.

However, Chelsea are believed to be unwilling to contemplate the possibility of letting Werner leave in January – least of all to a Premier League rival – though may be more open to selling the former Stuttgart striker in the summer.

Rangnick is keen to add some new signings when the window opens and has identified Leipzig midfielder Amadou Haidara as a potential target, though United are likely to need to offload players first.
