Fernando Santos is set to be sacked as head coach of Portugal, following their 2022 World Cup quarter-final exit.

Goal reports that Lille manager Paulo Fonseca is the frontrunner to replace him.

Santos’ men lost 1-0 to Morocco in the last eight and the Portuguese Football Federation (PFF) are now set to bring his eight-year stint to an end.

The 68-year-old made the decision to drop Cristiano Ronaldo for the last-16 clash with Switzerland and they won 6-1.

Goncalo Ramos, who replaced Ronaldo in the game, netted a hat-trick.

However, he has faced some criticisms after he repeated the decision for the Morocco tie.

Jose Mourinho has already been linked with the Portugal role, but Fonseca looks to be a strong option for the PFF.

Fonseca only took over at Lille in the summer and is under contract with the Ligue 1 side until 2024, but the former centre-back could be tempted by the role of national team manager.
