Ward attendants at the Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja, Kogi State, embarked on a peaceful protest on Tuesday over the death of one of their colleagues, the late Salamatu Aliu of Post Natal Ward.

Newspot learnt that the deceased was rushed to the hospital for medical attention on Sunday evening but was not attended to by doctors and nurses on duty due to a lack of electricity.

A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Newspot that the late Salamatu Aliu was later referred to Kogi State Specialist Hospital and died shortly after getting to the hospital.

“This negligence of doctors and nurses in the Accident and Emergency Ward here in Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja is unbecoming. This actually led to this peaceful protest to register our grievances with the hospital management, that we are not happy losing our own colleague. The management must do something to avert future occurrences. All lives matter and are equal. They should stop treating us unfairly,” the source stated.

The protesters, Newspot learnt, were later pacified to go back to work as they were assured that the issue will be thoroughly investigated.

All attempts to speak with the hospital management proved abortive at the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, the legal adviser to the hospital, Enny O. Esq., said the matter just came to his attention and is being addressed to ascertain what actually transpired.

Newspot recalls that a similar incident happened in Accident and Emergency Ward of the same hospital some months ago whereby relatives of a deceased patient assaulted some medical personnel for alleged negligence. The unfortunate incident prompted medical personnel in the hospital to down tools for days.
