Preamble:
Glory to God in the Highest, and on Earth Peace, goodwill toward men (Luke 2:14). We give thanks and praise to God for His Faithfulness in keeping, preserving, protecting us and safety in all our journeys especially to DIVCCON 2024. In the mist of the myriads of challenges and disturbing circumstances that have bedeviled our nation and indeed the whole world, our Testimony is that God has been our help. The battle between good and evil which began in Eden, is still ragging “But that be to God, Who gives us the Victory through our LORD Jesus Christ. Jesus is our Peace and the antidote to the chaos of this world. Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27)

024: “Peace, Be Still”
OUR THEME: PEACE BE STILL (MARK 4:39).
“And He arose and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” (KJV) The context of our theme was one of those moments in the Gospel of Mark that demonstrates the Power and Authority of JESUS over nature, emphasizing Sovereignty and power over all creation.
“Peace” is a central theme throughout the Bible, one that touches on the character of God, the work of Jesus Christ, and the nature of the Christian calling and life. In Scripture, “Peace” is more than the absence of conflict; it is a state of wholeness, harmony, and right relationship with God, people, and indeed God’s creation. Both the Old and New Testaments emphasize peace as a gift from God, a fruit of salvation, and a hallmark of the Kingdom of God.
Humanity enjoyed “Shalom” in its fullness at creation with Adam and Eve at peace with God, each other, and creation. The fall of man, however, disrupted this peace, introducing sin, conflict, and separation into the world (Genesis 3). In the New Testament, the concept of peace finds its ultimate fulfillment in the person and work of Jesus Christ. He brings this peace to its fullest expression. “Christ is our peace, He has reconciled us to God by His death on the Cross”.
Ephesians 2:11-18 brings out clearly the most profound aspect of Jesus’ role as the source and Giver of Peace is seen in His death on the cross. Through the Cross, Jesus not only brings individual reconciliation to God but also communal peace, uniting people from all nations into one body. Engendering relational and communal dimensions of Christian peace — it is not just personal but something that extends to the entire community of believers. There is no better time to emphasize the Peace and Unity we have in Christ Jesus than now when personal and Group Interests strive to override the LORDSHIP of Jesus Christ and the Mission of the Church and the good of Nigeria.
Peace, in the Biblical sense, is a multifaceted concept that encompasses wholeness, justice, and reconciliation, peace is both a gift from God and a calling for believers.
IMPLICATIONS OF THE THEME:
1. CHRIST OUR MODEL IN LIVING: “Do not be Afraid and be Anxious about nothing”.
In Mark 4:35-41, Jesus’ calmness is significant and worthy of emulation. He was not anxious nor panicky. He demonstrated a peace that transcends circumstances and foreshadows the peace he will soon bring to the raging waters. Anxiety and panic can be burdensome and have significant negative effects on both mental and physical health and spiritual life. It leads to chronic stress, impairing the immune system, and contributing to conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and gastrointestinal issues. It weighs down a person’s heart. Proverbs 12:25 says, “Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.” Jesus also teaches in Matthew 6:27, “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” In challenging circumstances, instead of the natural response of panicking, believe and cry out to God for His divine intervention. “Do not be anxious” or “Do be afraid “is a recurring message in the Bible, emphasizing God’s care and provision. In Philippians 4:6-7, the scriptures say, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Let us emulate Jesus Christ’s calmness and faith in the face of life’s challenges.
2. THE AUTHORITY OF JESUS: “Be Still”
In our theme text, Jesus wakes up, rebukes the wind, and commands the sea with the words, “Peace, be still!” The Greek word for “peace” here is oicona (siopao) which means to be silent or to hold one’s peace. The phrase “be still” comes from the Greek verb “necpipwoo” (pephimoso), which means to muzzle or to restrain. These words carry a sense of absolute authority and control, as though Jesus is addressing a living being, commanding it to submit to his will. Instantly, “The wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” This is not just a gradual subsiding of the storm but an instantaneous transformation from chaos to peace. In a matter of moments, the violent forces of nature are subdued by the voice of the Creator. This miracle demonstrates Jesus power over elements of the natural world. It is a revelation of his divine authority as the Son of God. Psalm 107:29 declares, “He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed.” By calming the storm with a word, Jesus reveals that he possesses the same authority as God. Hear the word of God, that storm you are going through in your marriage, in your workplace, in your business, in your ministry, in your health is commanded now in the name of Jesus Christ, Peace. Be still now!
3. GOD IS ALWAYS IN CONTROL:
When evil seems to prevail, many people grapple with the idea of God being in control of the world. Beloved in Christ, God is still in control of the work of His hands. He has not abdicated His responsibility to humans. He is sovereign and rules in the affairs of men! We must maintain a firm faith that God is in complete control, even in the face of evil. Our faith provides comfort and assurance that God’s goodness will prevail, even when the world seems chaotic. Challenges and adversity are part of the fire of the furnace to burn off the chaff in our lives as believers. Adversity serves as God’s means for spiritual growth and maturity. It strengthens our faith, builds our character, and draws us closer to God. God uses even the darkest circumstances for the greater good. Jesus’ response to the storm reveals that he is always in control, even when circumstances seem dire. His presence with the disciples in the boat signifies his ongoing presence with us, especially in times of trouble. Scripture promises that God is our refuge and strength, “a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). By turning to Jesus in faith, we can experience the peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:7).
4. STAND STRONG IN FAITH:
After calming the storm, Jesus turns to his disciples and asks, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” (Mark 4:40). This question challenges the disciples to examine their trust in him. Despite having witnessed Jesus perform many miracles, they still doubted his ability to protect and care for them in this moment of crisis. Jesus’ rebuke points to the importance of faith in the Christian life, especially when faced with fear. Fear is a natural human response to danger, but faith is the response that Jesus calls us his disciples to demonstrate. Faith does not eliminate the reality of storms, but it changes the way we respond to them. Instead of being controlled by fear, we are called to trust in the presence and power of Christ, who is with us through every trial. God promised that “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you.”1 True Peace comes from knowing that God is sovereign and that no storm — whether physical, emotional, or spiritual — is beyond HIS control.
5. RECIEVE GOD’S GIFT OF PEACE IN CHRIST:
The command “Peace, be still” goes forth with the Power of God.
Beloved in Christ, True peace comes from placing our trust in Jesus, who has authority over every storm. Whether we face external trials or internal struggles, the same Jesus who calmed the sea is with us, offering his peace and calling us to deeper faith. His words, “Peace, be still,” continue to speak to us today, reminding us that in him, we can find rest and God’s assurance of peace today.
SUNDRY MATTERS:
RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND
The Church of England has derailed in Faith. They have not only voted to approve Same-Sex Marriage and the Liturgy for the celebration of such rebellion against God. God will always have a remnant, a few weeks ago we were in the UK with other GAFCON leaders to consult with the Alliance and other Evangelical and Orthodox leaders of the Church to encourage them and work with them to have a safe and faithful spiritual Home to continue their Mission and Ministry of the Kingdom of God. The CON will stand and work with GAFCON to uphold Biblical Orthodoxy and Faithfulness in proclamation of the Gospel and maintaining our cherished Anglican Heritage. On these, there is no turning back!
THE DECADE OF THE REIGN OF GOD: CHALLENGES & PROSPECTS
We shall continue to focus on Mission, Evangelism and Discipleship, Building Peace and Reconciliation, Discipline in the Church, building the Christian Family, Youth Mission, building Institution for sustaining the missions of the church, and taking our leading role in the Universal Church and most importantly, being used of God to stir the Global Body of Christ unto Mission and preparing the Church for the Return of our LORD JESUS CHRIST. We are indeed very grateful for your prayers, counsel and support.
We thank the CNMS management for coordinating the October Mission activities across our Church. They will be recruiting Missionary workers for training and deployment in the Mission fields in Africa. Missions must be at the front burner at levels of our Church life. If you sense the call of God to be a cross-cultural missionary meet with them at this conference for more detail.
We appreciate the labor of all our Archbishops and Bishops who have been appointed to serve as Episcopal Provincial Mission Coordinators to strengthen our mission engagement and coordination at the Provincial level. They are helping us to facilitate and coordinate missions’ enterprise in the Province and advise the CNMS board on Missionary needs in the area.
The Church of Nigeria will be hosting a World Mission Congress from September 29th to October 3, 2025, by the grace of God.
JOSHUA GENERATION INTERNATIONAL YOUTH CONFERENCE 2024
The 4th edition of this mission was held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium from April 1st to 6th, 2024. The theme was, “My Identity” (Colossians 2:8-23). Well over 25,000 youth were physically present from across our Dioceses. A thousand others joined online, and many gave their lives to Christ. The conference was a huge success, and we are grateful to God for His move among the youth. We were, thrilled with the youth empowerment platform this conference has created for our young people in film production, Church of Nigeria Football Club (CONAC FC), Joshua Generation Digital Skills Training, and Cross-Cultural Mission Training.
We desire that JGIYC will become self-sustainable and outlive us through a strategic sustainable financial plan. Consequently, the Standing Committee at Nike approved the strategic plan for sustainable funding as follows:
1. Establish a Youth Missions Investment Fund with its Board Of Trustee
2. Open a Special JGIYC Funding Account and consider how to sustain the Funding of this Youth Mission of the Church.
3. The JGIYC Leadership will work with the Bishops on the modalities. We request for your Prayers and continued support.
CHURCH OF NIGERIA CONFERENCE CENTRE, PYAKASA
There is a dire need for a suitable Conference Centre for the Church of Nigeria since we have Annual Conferences such as DIVCCON, Joshua Generation International Youth Conference, the EFAC, AYF, ACM. We have commenced the development of our Conference Centre by building of the perimeter Fence to secure our land. This has reached an advanced stage. We hope that the work on the Main Auditorium will soon start. We thank all who have supported this Project.
CHURCH OF NIGERIA HEALTH AND MEDICAL MISSION SUMMIT
The Maiden Edition of the conference on the Health and Medical Mission of the Church was held from 13th to 16th August, 2024. We trust God that through the Medical Professionals in the Church of Nigeria there shall be the repositioning of the Health and Healing Ministry and Mission of the Church with a comprehensive
Health Policy for the Church that will Guide Parishes and Dioceses on the best way to achieve effective Healthcare delivery for the Citizens of our Nation.
THE CO-ORDINATING TEAM FOR DIVCCON:
We appreciate the Labor and leadership of Archbishop Tunde Adeleye in DIVCCON since its inception. We have appointed Bishop Steven Akobe to assist him. We thank God for you both. By next year we shall reconstitute the DIVCCON Management Team.
CONCLUSION:
The Lord has brought us to DIVCCON 2024 to bless us, restore us, transform our lives, and meet us at the point of our needs. Through the theme, “Peace, be still” Mark 4:39, God is assuring us of His presence and power to confront all our challenges, all He demands of us is total submission. We implore you to be open to the Holy Spirit’s workings in this conference. The Lord shall work mightily among us breaking every yoke and calming every storm in your life, Marriage, Ministry, Work and Business in the Name of Jesus Christ.
The LORD be with you!
